Yes, you read that correctly. I have finished my novel, the very first one. Yesterday, around 9pm is when the last word was written. I had given myself a deadline of today, Oct. 31st and I brought it in a day early.

A few days ago, it was looking bleak. I had added a section that required some historical research and it was slowing me down, and threatening to make it drift into November. But I pulled it off, and kind of surprised myself by being a day ahead of schedule.

So, I’m very happy about that, not only to finally have it finished, but for the fact that I plan to do nanowrimo starting tomorrow! And I didn’t want to be trying to write two books at once. Plus, the one I start tomorrow is meant to be the sequel. So, I kind of had to finish this one first.

I’ve never done nanowrimo before. I’m a bit nervous about it, but I have been writing regularly, so hopefully the writing muscles have become well-conditioned. Mostly, I will have to prevent myself from editing as I write (and looking up details and verifying facts) and just get it out. The main issue with that is that I only have a vague notion of what the next book is about, so I’ll be mind mapping tonight.

But back to the finished one! It’s been a long time in the making. It started off as a short story roughly ten years ago and was never meant to be a novel at all. But it kept growing. It was a novella for a while, but friends who read it said it could be longer, that there were story bits that could be fleshed-out or were missing entirely. So, I took up the challenge. And now, it is done.

I’m going to let it rest for a bit, and then I’ll give it another read through. I know there are some tiny edits that need to happen, but they are easy: just a place name that I know doesn’t work and small things like that. I’m pretty sure the story itself all works—pretty sure… I’ll hand it off to some beta readers, get some feedback. And I’ll let you know. But the story is done. If there are any changes, they should be minor. Then I’ll go about getting it published.

I’m super excited about this. This is a milestone. Now, to make it a regular thing.

AND soon, I’ll be able to get back to blogging about this book and sharing artwork and other juicy tidbits, like teasers and bonus stuff that is perhaps not in the book. So, I’m looking forward to that.

Oh, and there are scary bits too, so Happy Halloween!

Now, I’m off to sign up for nanowrimo. My first novel took ten years, and now I plan to write the second one in a month!

Anyone else doing nano?? Let me know in the comments. We can share war stories. Or maybe you can give me pointers if you’re a veteran.
