Words vs. Time

I wrote 745 words today on book 3 of The Ghost and the Mask. It’s not a lot, but it’s more than my daily goal, which is only 500 these days. It used to be 1000, and I hope to get back up to that, but the time just isn’t in the day right now.

And, truth be told, I’m trying to transition to more of a time goal these days, rather than a word count. It’s been a bit of a challenge, but when time is limited, I find that a time goal can be more effective. If I can sit down for an hour, or even fifteen minutes on really busy days, at least it’s something. As opposed to not writing anything at all because I know I won’t get 1000 words in fifteen minutes.

Writers, what is your favorite method to measure your work? Word count or timed writing?

What are your thoughts?
